Week 6 Events

Feb-13-2012 By Jon

Helllllllooooooooooo Pep Band!!!!!!!!

So we’ve made it through week 5, we are officially half way through the quarter! Let’s just say the quarter is half started. Lame jokes aside, now that we’ve gotten through spirit weekend, picking davis themes, and dancing at the Revelle semi-formal, it is time to get to business. So here is what we have planned for the week:

Tuesday – Rehearsal – 7:45 P.M. – RIMAC Arena

For all you love birds out there this is the night to come out to band and show how much you LOVE PEP BAND! What better way to feel the power of love than coming and rehearsing? I can’t think of any other way to celebrate. So come out for this special rehearsal because we will be not only playing songs, but signing up for room assignments for Davis (four to a room), and word on the street is, in honor of St. Valentine’s Day there may be a scandalous love filled joke (whatever that means).

Friday – Men’s Volleyball – 6:15 – RIMAC Arena

Now that we’ve completed the basketball season, we move onto men’s volleyball. Hope everyone is ready to watch those men hit some balls around, because if not then you are in for a rough night. So whether it is for the short shorts, the balls, or just spending good quality time breaking spirits the brightest and best volleyball men out there, come on out to be with the band!

Friday – Social Activity – Movie Night

Following the game we will all head over to Doug’s house to watch a fun and exciting motion picture feature film. It will be oodles of fun, and just the right way to kick off your weekend. We will be watching the Grosser family home videos from 1995-1998. It will be a great time, and guess what, we will have a Q&A with Doug Grosser, star of the films following. So don’t miss it! …………..but seriously we are doing a movie night.

Saturday – Men’s Volleyball – 6:15 – RIMAC Arena

We are back Saturday night to cheer on our team against the old Stanford ……oh yeah they don’t have an official mascot. Join us (and I mean me) as we (I) yell at Stanford to tell them that a color does not count as a mascot. While many think the tree is their mascot, it is not official, it is the bands mascot, so as good citizens of this fine institution we will school them in what is an acceptable mascot.

Sunday – Davis Decorating – Mandeville (by the tatoo hall) – 12 – 3.

Now that we have a theme, we need to start making decorations. Come join the officers for a fun time of painting and making kandi (the beads that ravers wear). We have a lot of cool ideas, but we need your help to come pull it all off, so if you like painting, being artsy, and having fun with the band, come join us. If you don’t like painting but like to color with a brush inside predrawn lines, and having fun with the band, come join us!

P.S. The webslave apologizes for not posting last week’s events. He has been dutifully chastised and requests that the bricks covered with snakes stop being tossed through his bedroom window. Repairs are getting expensive, people.

Week 4 Events

Jan-30-2012 By Jon

Hey Pep Band,

Spirit week is upon us! Which means it is time to amp up the spirit to level 11, and bring on the cheer (I don’t know what any of that means, but 10 points if you can spot the Spinal Tap reference). It also means, Pep Band Alumni Weekend! So take a look at what we have going on for the week:

Tuesday, 7:45 P.M. – Rehearsal – RIMAC Arena

Time to polish those dance moves, oil up the valves, and replace the pads on your keys. Make sure you are sounding your best before the big night!

Thursday, 12:00 P.M. – Spirit Rally, Price Center Quad

Athletics is putting on their annual spirit rally, which means we get to showcase our talents, lets think of it as a mini spirit night, except not in the gym, without 2/3 of the attendance, and no alumni. Ok, so think of it what you want, but be sure to be there so we can show the campus who we are and that spirit night is awesome because of us (and I guess the athletic teams). Also, it is only an hour, max, so come on out and show your spirit!

Friday, 4:30 P.M. – Spirit Night!!!! BASKETBALL DOUBLE HEADER, RIMAC Arena

Come on out for the big night, starting with the women’s basketball, at 5:30. Our theme is the now traditional “SUPER HAWAIIAN”, so go crazy with decorations. We are getting there a little earlier than normal, because we have decorations to set up, so please come help set up, get into your spirit gear, (hula skirts, and face paint) and make sure to bring what ever costumes you can get for the night! Oh and we are playing Cal State LA, so be prepared to tell them how sad it is that they couldn’t make it to UCLA.

Friday – 10:00 p.m. Social Event

After the game we will go and hang out with the Alumni, since we haven’t seen a lot of them in so long! Be sure to talk to Rose about attendance for the hang out. If you haven’t talked to her yet, please do so and be prepared to do so on Tuesday!

Saturday – Alumni BBQ – Location TBA 12:00 – 4:30 p.m.

With spirit week comes the Annual Alumni BBQ! This event is a ton of fun because we get to chat with the alumni and hear old stories (kinda like when Kirk and Jeff talk about the band) Rides will be at Sun God at 11:30. Be sure to be there, you won’t want to miss it!

Saturday – 4:45 P.M. – Basketball Double Header – RIMAC Arena

After our lovely alumni bbq, we will be heading back together for the double header to cheer on our teams once again. We are playing Cal State Dominguez Hills, which means we get to tell them how sad it is that they couldn’t make it into Cal State LA.

Sunday Feb 5th- 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. (GRADUATING SENIORS ONLY)

After a long and busy weekend we get to end our weekend with the Alumni & Graduating Senior Brunch at Casa de Guadalajara. It is for graduating seniors and alumni only, so if you are either of those be sure to be there.

See you all Tuesday.

Week 3 Events

Jan-23-2012 By Jon

Hello Pep Band!

Great job this week, as usual. We made it through another week, which brings us to week 3. Here is what we have planned:

Tuesday – Reharsal, 7:45 P.M. RIMAC Arena

I know last week was technically our first rehearsal, and people haven’t had to get to rehearsal in a month, but try to make sure you get there at 7:45 so we can start promptly at 8. We have a lot to cover. A will continue to dust off songs in preparation for Davis as well as continue nominating themes. This is our last week of nominations so bring your best ideas!

Friday – Men’s Volleyball – 6:15 – RIMAC Arena – CRAZY HAT NIGHT!

The basketball teams are hitting the road which means we get to play at the volleyball game! We are playing the Pepperdine waves (and I thought a seawolf was weird), and nothing says, “hey make fun of me,” like a mascot named Willie the Wave. So bring your spirit, your heckle, and we will see you at 6:15. Oh hey and for an added kick, be sure to wear your craziest (or only) hat to the game. If you don’t do it, you may look silly!

Saturday – Men’s Volleyball – 6:15, RIMAC Arena

That’s right ladies and gentlemen we are back in Rimac to cheer on the men against the USC Trojans. Make your checks payable to UCSD referees so we can pay them more than they will. Its should be an exciting game!

Have a good Monday and we will see you Tuesday!

Week 2 Events

Jan-17-2012 By Jon

Hey Pep Band,

Hope everyone is enjoying their day off! Great job this weekend, it was a lot, but we sounded and looked great. It was a bit of a long week to rush into so fast, so this week we will take it a little slower.

Tuesday – 8:00 P.M. – RIMAC Arena – Rehearsal

So we missed our rehearsal last week, so we have a lot to get done this week. We will start dusting off our old charts, check out some new pieces that have been arranged for us, and we will be nominating Davis themes, so make sure you don’t miss it!

Friday – UPDATE: 4:45 P.M. – RIMAC Arena – Basketball Double Header

We will be back at RIMAC to cheer on our basketball teams against the ol’ Sonoma State SeaWolves. Not only will we have to cheer on our teams to victory, but let them know that they would have had a cooler mascot if they were the Sonoma State Loch Ness Monsters.

Saturday – 5:00 P.M. – RIMAC Arena – Basketball Double Header

It is that time of year where we play against the school who’s band plays in the battle of the bands that we play in too. OMG, small world! So come on out and let’s show them that just because their mascot’s name is Lucky Lumberjack doesn’t mean they will have enough to win.

Week 1 Events

Jan-9-2012 By Jon

Hello Pep Band!

I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing, and fun break and are ready to kick off Winter Quarter! We have a lot going on this week, so make sure to unpack your bags sooner than later because you won’t want to miss any of it!

Tuesday – Triton Jam: 6:45 P.M. – RIMAC Arena

Our first week back we are going to be playing at Triton Jam to welcome everyone back. We are gonna pump people up as they come into the gym and show them that they live inferior lives for not being in the Greatest Band in the Land! So make sure to be there on time and we will rock their socks off!

Friday – Basketball Double Header: 4:45 P.M. – RIMAC Arena

We are back to school, which means we are back to RIMAC to support our teams, Men and Women (gender equality FTW). The women’s game starts at 5:30, so make sure you are there on time for the National Anthem. In between games we get some free pizza brought to you by Triton Tide, and then we will go cheer on the men to victory as well!

Saturday – Basketball Double Header: 4:45 P.M. RIMAC Arena

After we rally the crowds we are back in RIMAC to rally the fans and team to victory against ol’ Monterey Bay. So make sure to come out for the next double header to show those Sea Otters not to mess with the King of the Sea!

Sunday – MLK Jr. Parade: 12:00 P.M. – Sun God Statue

It is that time of year for us to dust off the ol’ marching drums and put on our saunter shoes for the MLK Jr. Parade! As one of my favorite events of the year, I hope you will all join us as we play for our fans in the streets of San Diego (fear not, we play our standards, which you all know by now). So meet at Sun God, where we will be getting buses and shirts (if you are late, you will not be able to join, since we are not driving, be sure to be on time)!

Note: If you come to both double headers and the parade, you will get DOUBLE DAVIS POINTS!

Have a good first week of classes and we will see you Tuesday!

Week 10 Events

Nov-28-2011 By Jon

Hey Pep Band,

I hope this message finds you well after a nice little break before finals! I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving break was enjoyable and refreshing. This
is our last week of the quarter before finals, which means WINTER BREAK IS IN TWO WEEKS! So here is what we have planned before we all
scurry off and burry ourselves in books and notes for finals week:

Tuesday, 7:45 P.M. – RIMAC Green Room

For Tuesday’s rehearsal, we won’t be playing, we will be doing a white elephant gift exchange. “The UCSD Pep Band has a long tradition here at UCSD of not playing on week ten, but doing something fun like watching movies etc.” This year we will be doing our white elephant gift exchange. For those who don’t know how this works: everyone who comes to rehearsal must bring a WRAPPED gift with a $10 maximum spending limit. We put them in a pile and then everyone goes around choosing these gifts with then ability to trade with other people. It is a fun game of not knowing what you will get and everyone walks away with a fun little gift!

Friday, 6:45 – SunGod Parking Lot – HOLIDAY DINNER

“The Pep Band has a long tradition of coming together at the end of fall quarter and celebrating the end of a great first quarter by partaking in activities that include consuming large amounts of home cooked food and enjoying each others company to wrap up the quarter before we all run off to finals.” Here is how it works:
Everyone must bring something, or else we won’t be having much of a dinner. Below I’ve copied the food categories which are determined by your last name. For those who don’t know, or the old people who forgot to do this already, make sure that you claim what you are brining so we don’t end up with 35 pumpkin pies and 74 green bean casseroles. So please start claiming those now so people have time to shop, cook, and decide what to bring if their food is claimed!

Food assignments are by last name:
A-H: Desserts
I-P: Appetizers
Q-Z: Sides and Salads

If you want to bring something other than your category, that’s okay! Just please confirm it with me first. And store bought is TOTALLY okay! No need to stress with cooking.

So that is that! See you all on Tuesday with your gifts!

Best,
Andrew Mandinach
Manager, UCSD Pep Band

Week 9 Events

Nov-21-2011 By Jon

Hey Pep Band,

Great job today we sounded great over the weekend and we beat Davis, which means a job well done! And we even beat the rain! How about that!

So here is what we have up for this short week:

Tuesday – Rehearsal – MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME – 6:15

So there is a Men’s Basketball game on Tuesday, so we will be playing at that instead of rehearsal. This is our first game of the season (the band not the team) so let’s go out there and show them we mean business! Game starts at 7, so if you have class until then or even if it ends during the game, come on over and play! See you there!

Thursday – THANKSGIVING

Hope everyone has a nice celebration with friends and family!

IMPORTANT Reminder: Holiday Dinner is right around the corner (Friday of Week 10), which means HOLIDAY DINNER. It is really fun because we all dress up and look snazzy and have a giant feast fit for the greatest band in all the land! So everyone brings food based on the equation below. So keep this in mind as you are shopping for Black Friday deals, make sure to get food for the band!

See you all Tuesday!

Week 8 Events

Nov-14-2011 By Jon

Can you believe it is week 8?!!? I can’t! Time sure flies when you are having a blast with the pep band! Good lub on Saturday, we sounded great, cheered out team to victory, and brought tears to the team’s eyes! So while it may seem like things are wrapping up, fear not because we have a big week a head:

Tuesday – Rehearsal – 7:45, RIMAC Green Room

So we have some very prestigious gigs later in the week so it is time we come together and make sure we sound the best we can be!

Friday – FOUNDER’S DAY – 11:15, Student Service Center, Multipurpose Room (across from the bottom of the stairs leading up to croutons)

So one 50 years ago Friday we were founded as an institution of higher learning. We played last year for the “first annual celebration” and it was big deal. So while this is now technically 51, we celebrating 50 years of UCSD and it will still be a big deal (because they have the best band in the land coming to bless their ceremonies).
They need us there to check in at 11:15. We will play from 11:40 – 12:00 then from 12:30 – 12:50. This is a very high profile event that we need to make sure we have numbers for, so make sure you can be there. If you have class, run to and from it to make sure you can play. If you need us to bring an instrument let us know ahead of time and we will get it for you!

Thursday – Sunday – Men’s Water polo and Women’s Volleyball Tournaments – TBA

So every year the women’s volleyball team kicks butt and ends up going to their semi finals in San Bernardino, and the band always makes a trip out to play for them there! It is our last big hoorah of their season. However this year there is also a water polo championship tournament, which is being held on our campus this year. As of Friday, there was no word as to when the games will be, so keep your calendars open, because if we can we will go to San Bernardino for Thursday-Saturday night, but we may also be here on campus playing for the water polo team. Either way it will be fun, so don’t miss out!

Saturday – Bonfire – TBD

If we don’t end up going playing Saturday, we will be having a bonfire. So plan to be hanging with your favorite people!

Have a good week 8, see you Tuesday!

Andrew Mandinach

Week 7 Events

Nov-7-2011 By Jon

Hello Pep Band,

Great job today for those who came out and played in the rain. We got a lot of compliments from both UCSD and UCLA fans. Not to mention, Penny Rue commented on our Facebook wall after she was our guest conductor on Friday! We are moving up in the world! So here is what is up for week 7:

Tuesday – Rehearsal – 7:45 P.M. – Rimac

We are going to continue dusting off the old charts, and we might even be playing a few new arrangements. So come check it out, it’ll be fun as usual!

Friday – Women’s Volleyball – 6:15 – Rimac

So it was a close call at the very end of that last game on Friday, so let’s go cheer on our ladies against Cal State East Bay… where ever that is. Also, the ladies have specifically requested our presence for both Friday and Saturday’s game. They missed us when we were at Light the Night, so make sure you come, there may be a surprise!

Saturday – Women’s Volleyball – 6:15 – Rimac

Come on our for THE LAST regular women’s volleyball game of the season. It has been a great season, so let’s show our support for them on their last game before Regionals! As they say go big or go home, and we know the pep band ain’t goin home!

Great job this week performing in the rain! Keep up the great work and enthusiasm! See you all Tuesday!

Andrew Mandinach

Week 6 Events

Oct-31-2011 By Jon

Hello my peppy pepsters!

How’s it going? Hope everyone has thawed since that hockey game last night! After our very busy few weeks, we will take it a little easy this week.
Here is what is up:

Tuesday: Rehearsal, 7:45 P.M. – RIMAC Arena

We polished off those halloween classics, now it is time to put them away forever and ever and start looking at new songs.

Friday: Light the Night, 6:00 P.M. – RIMAC Arena

Pep Band is doing its part to fight against Leukemia & Lymphoma! We are going down to the Del Mar Fair Grounds to play for the walkers. It is a really fun time! The walkers dance and sing, get so excited to see us there! So lets go Light the Night and do our part in the cause!
Meet at Rimac at 6:00, to help load cars and to drive to the location. For those who can drive make sure you have full cars since you don’t want to pay (we can get reimbursed for a few cars) for a car that isn’t fully loaded. The directions are below.
Take the 5 north, exit Via de la Valle, make a left. Make a left at Jimmy Durante Blvd. And then a right into the main parking lot of the fairgrounds. (There will be signs directing you back to where the event is).

Saturday: Women’s Volleyball, 6:15 P.M. – RIMAC

The volleyball women are back, and so are we! We will be playing against those Lumberjack’s to the north! It is time to show those Humboldt hippies that plaid and jeans are never never as fashionable as a bare chest and a tail!

Sunday: Men’s Volleyball vs. UCLA, 11:30 A.M.

Our water polo team has been winning most of their games, and we (the UCSD pep band) have been asked to show our support. So grab your swimsuits, make a cape out of your favorite beach towel, grab your horn and head down to Canyonview pool to cheer our team on to victory! Report time is 11:00 A.M. if you need to grab anything from the cage (or just want to be helpful), or 11:30 A.M. at Canyonview Pool.

Have a safe and fun Halloween and we will see you all on Tuesday!
